Crotalus joined Cobra at the age of 18. He survived several years as a Blue Shirt before joining the ranks of the Vipers. While a Viper, he applied to many of the upper-level training cadres; Snow Serpents, SAND Vipers, Night Vipers, Alley Vipers, and EELs, always being passed over for someone with more experience and higher esteem in the Cobra Organization. He jumped at the opportunity when he received the call-up for the newly established NEO-Viper* Unit. He was subject to numerous Venom Serum genetic alterations that allowed him to survive conditions that would lead to the demise of others. He began his service in the Arctic Circle, helping to establish research bases for many of Cobra's more hostile experiments. The Unit rotated to the American Southwest, where they worked to protect Cobra bases.
When the shit hit the fan, Cobra Command transferred his Unit to defend a town that was a front for Cobra Hierarchy and Officers. They spent over a year successfully defending their site until a saboteur destroyed it from within. A disgruntled child of a Cobra Officer successfully set off an explosive device that punched a hole in the town's defenses, allowing a horde to enter. The NEO-Vipers fought until they were the last ones standing. Following established orders, they scattered into the desert, where they were to stay until they were recalled or died.
With the establishment of New Springfield, Crotalus is a long-distance scout. His mission is not to engage the enemy but to provide intelligence.
